Avoid runny-nose woes at your residency interviews. Follow these tips to stay healthy.

Wondering how to stay fit and strong during residency interviews? Take a look.

In the midst of all the excitement about your upcoming residency interviews, here’s something you’ll want to remember: your health.

You’re a doctor. You’re not a road warrior. And sometimes all this traveling for residency interviews can really be exhausting, especially with the stress that comes along with being in medical school.

In a recent survey of candidates interviewing for fellowships after residency, 50 percent said they didn’t know how to handle the fatigue and 75 percent said they felt they caught a cold from all the “running around” of their residency interviews.

So what can you do to stay healthy while traveling and avoid showing up to your residency interviews with a box of tissues in hand? Take a look at these tips.

Why sleep matters

While pulling all-nighters might seem normal when you’re in medical school, constant sleep deprivation is stressful to your body because it raises cortisol levels. Over time, hypercortisolism weakens your immune system and makes you more susceptible to colds. If you had poor sleeping habits in medical school, make a conscious effort to change during your residency.

Tips for traveling to residency interviews

Whether  you’re traveling by plane, train, or automobile, most modes of transportation have a few things in common (besides delays). Here’s what you need to watch out for:

  • Dry air will cause your nasal mucous membranes to become less effective as barriers to viruses. Consider packing saline nose spray or drops.
  • You’re more likely to become dehydrated. Bring a water bottle and fill up frequently.
  • Watch your caffeine intake. Too much caffeine can make your body shake. No one wants to interview a candidate who looks ready for liftoff.

Don’t skip Vitamin C

Vitamin C doesn’t affect the occurrence of colds. However, studies show that it might reduce the duration of cold symptoms. If you’re getting sick, boost your endurance with an orange, a glass of OJ, or a Vitamin C supplement. This little trick will come in handy during your residency, too.

You are what you eat

During your residency interviews, you’ll be wooed with brownies, sushi, and other tempting treats. Be mindful of what you’re eating during your three months of jet-setting. Regardless of what time zone you’re in, you need to eat three meals a day. Bonus points if you can squeeze in a run with your other medical school friends after chowing down on that chicken parmesan at lunch.
